When Google has just started promotion of Android mobile devices, was formed Open Handset Alliance, which includes the major vendors for the joint development and use of open standards for mobile devices. Today there include Google, HTC, Intel, Motorola, Qualcomm, Samsung, LG and many others. After 6 years, Google has decided to repeat the experiment and organized an Open Automotive Alliance, which will include the major players of the automobile industry, who wished to use Android as an operating system onboard.
Take part in the project have already agreed to Audi , GM, Honda and Hyundai. Also, as a development partner in the list of participants is listed NVIDIA, which will be responsible for manufacturing and introduction of computerized equipment for cars.
Google motivates its decision by the fact that today there are separate cars and a variety of mobile devices on Android. The main objective of the alliance is the combination of these two completely different ecosystems for mutual empowerment. Introduction of a full computer with a standalone operating system allows to shift the control of all life-support systems, including safety and navigation. Also, it will accelerate the development of new anti-theft systems and methods of driving, which can lead to full autopilot without human intervention.
At the moment there is no information about when we will see the first results of the joint work of the alliance, but Google said that it will not happen before the end of 2014. In addition, the Alliance is open to all comers, and any vendor can participate in the program. More information is available on the official website Open Automotive Alliance .
